I have just wrapped up my first playthrough of Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition, and let me tell you, it’s been a wild ride! As someone who usually gravitates toward RPGs, Devil May Cry 4 was a refreshing and fun change of pace —though it did come with its own set of surprises and some minor frustrations. Let’s dive into this Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition – Final Fantasy Fangirl review!

Wait! I Wasn’t Ready!

I’m a Final Fantasy Fangirl, so let’s be real – any game that doesn’t come with an insane amount of totally random side quests, at least a few hours of emotional damage-inducing cut scenes and a massive story, is gonna feel short to me. The credits rolled after what felt like a prologue to me, but for such a short game, it still managed to throw some emotional punches (and a lot of demons!).

Who Needs All Those Weapons When You Can Throw Around Demons?!

I’m a Final Fantasy Fangirl, so I picked the easiest difficulty this time around. I’m in this game to have fun, not to start throwing controllers instead of throwing around demons. That said, the difficulty mode might have saved both my sanity and controller when the game decided the demon-throwing party was over for a bit. I didn’t need Dante and a whole range of different styles, weapons and whatever. I just wanted to throw around demons.

The Frustrations: That One Boss Fight™

I was doing fine and then that boss fight hit. You know the one—the one (technically two) with the two tiny rage-inducing orbs. I survived, somehow, but my controller may never emotionally recover. After that battle, the final boss fight did feel a little underwhelming and seeing the credits appear on screen did catch me of guard. The biggest frustration? The countdown marking my last two minutes of throwing around demons. Final Fantasy Fangirl did in fact cry. And soon after Final Fantasy Fangirl would cry again.

RIP Trophy

You know what’s even more annoying than your epic demon throwing journey coming to an end? Your trophy poppin’ up only to disappear a few moments later, never to be seen again. I’ll be back for it. Just you wait.

Can We Make The Soundtrack Louder?

I love the soundtrack! The rock and metal vibes had me headbanging mid-battle. You know those annoying people that keep harassing graphic designers to make the logo bigger? That’s me, but asking if the soundtrack can be a little louder. Pretty please.

Different Characters, Same Chaos

So Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition gives you access to other characters like Vergil, Lady, and Trish, so naturally, my RPG-lovin’ Final Fantasy Fangirl brain got excited. Bonus storylines? Emotional arcs? Secret lore unlocks? I’m here for it!

NOPE.
Same missions. Same bosses. Zero new cutscenes.

And let’s talk about the real tragedy here: you don’t even get more demon throwing, because that’s Nero’s party trick.

Final Fantasy Fangirl’s Final Thoughts

Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition is a fun, action-packed, demon throwing detour from my usual RPG routine. If you’re ready for some fast-paced combat, gorgeous combos, and killer music, Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition is officially Final Fantasy Fangirl approved! That being said, I have some more demons to throw around to take my trophy back!
